In an emotional reunion, retired teachers of Evans Elementary School returned to their former campus to see the remarkable renovations completed over the summer of 2023.
This was the first time many of the former educators had seen the updates.
Evans has undergone a transformation that emphasizes collaborative learning throughout the school, funded by the 2020 Bond. The renovation included the integration of geothermal wells to provide an eco-friendly heating and cooling solution, and the repurposing of mechanical rooms to create additional classroom and collaborative spaces.
Katie Rasmussen, the school counselor, emphasized the positive impact these changes have had on the school environment, saying, "We've gained valuable square footage for classrooms and collaborative spaces, allowing our students to work together more effectively, whether they're in the same grade or not."
Evans Elementary School's renovations are an example of how educational spaces can evolve to meet the changing needs of students and educators, fostering a more collaborative, sustainable, and innovative learning environment.
Vicki Reynolds, one of the school's charter members and a former second-grade teacher, expressed her admiration for the renovated spaces, particularly the areas designed for collaborative learning. "It's always good for kids to work together and giving them the space to focus specifically on their learning is pretty amazing," Reynolds remarked.
The emotional depth of the visit was clear, especially for Mary Anne Davis, who taught first grade at Evans for 12 years. “It's emotional seeing the transformation of the building and seeing the kids and the teachers look so happy,” Mary Anne remarked.
The reunion and tour not only allowed former teachers to reconnect with the school but also showcased the significant advancements in educational environments that Evans Elementary is experiencing.
Principal Preston's role in leading these efforts was highlighted as a full-circle moment for the community, illustrating the growth and progress of the school from its opening to the present day. Mary Anne continued, "Getting to see Principal Preston, who was an art teacher here when Evans opened, and now he's leading the school, is just amazing."
